Transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair can be tricky. But don’t lose hope; I’ve got some transition tips to help you along. First the basics, perms are designed to give you straight hair for 6 - 8 weeks. Getting to the end of that time period does not natural hair make. Going from relaxed to natural can take months, sometimes up to a year, depending on the length of your hair. Patience is the name of the game. During the transition, you will definitely need to take extra care of your hair, especially where moisture is concerned. Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize. Capiche? Creme of Nature has some great moisturizing products, from shampoos and conditioners to daily maintenance. Check out the products that would work best for your hair at www.cremeofnature.com. My favorites are part of the Argan Oil line because they are moisturizing, conditioning and light weight.
There are several ways to make the transition: 1) cut it off, 2) wear braids, weaves or wigs, 3) low-maintenance styles, or 4) stretching.
Cut it off. For you brave sisters out there, "the big chop" or cutting your hair down to the new growth may be just the thing for you. If you’re comfortable with your inner queen and know you look good, go for it! Wearing your hair this short will emphasize your beautiful features and allows you to play around with make-up and jewelry. The key is to keep the cut well groomed and moisturized.
Wear braids, weaves or wigs. Wearing braids or weaves can help speed along the growth process, but be careful that they are not too tight. Tight braids and weaves can cause traction alopecia and breakage. You’ll need to keep your hair moisturized. Don’t leave the braids or weaves in too long, as locking and hair loss may occur. I suggest leaving them in for no longer than 1-2 months at a time. Remove the braids or weave, shampoo and deep condition your hair with moisturizing products. You’ll also need to clip your ends. If you choose to wear a wig, you must still care for your hair as though you weren’t wearing a wig. That means regularly shampooing, conditioning and moisturizing. You’ll also need to clip your ends every 6 – 8 weeks.
Low-maintenance hair styles. Wearing your hair in a loose ponytail, bun or French roll is a low-maintenance way to wear your hair during the transition. The use of a light protein-based gel or a wrap lotion like Lottabody’s Carrot & Keratin Foam Wrap or Setting Lotion along with an oil moisturizer like Creme of Nature’s Argan Oil Moisturizer will help keep the hair smooth. Using a wrap scarf after applying the products also helps smooth the hair.
Stretching. A black hair care technique called "stretching" is used to increase the time between relaxer treatments. While most touch-ups occur every 6 to 8 weeks, progressively stretching the touch-up time to 10, 12, 14 weeks and longer helps you learn how to manage your new hair texture until you have eventually ‘stretched’ out so far you no longer need a relaxer. If you try the ‘stretching’ method, moisturizing the hair is extremely important as is a good detangler. Two great products to try are the Sunflower & Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo and the Chamomile & Comfrey Healing Conditioner.
So go on, become the natural beauty you were meant to be. Let me know how these tips work for you.
