All of us want fabulous hair and we’ll do just about anything to get it. We routinely blow dry and straighten our hair. We comb and brush until every little strand is in place. We twist it, wrap it, and let’s not talk about the never-ending collection of products we use to accomplish that perfect hair style. We all want perfect hair, but did you realize that all the grooming we do can sometimes have a damaging effect on it?
Damaged hair is caused by factors such as excessive heat styling, chemical straightening, weather conditions and friction. According to experts, high-temperature hair dryers, curling irons and those wonderful flat irons we like to use can cause bubbles to form in hair fiber, resulting in locks that are weak, brittle and prone to breakage. Chemical treatments, including bleaching, coloring and relaxers, can also weaken our hair and invite damage, especially with too frequent use. Harsh weather conditions can also cause our hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. During the summer, the sun's UV rays break protein in hair. For those of you in cities where you actually have a winter, it’s the most drying to hair because there’s less moisture in the air. The cold winds roughen the hair’s cuticle. Physically, damaged hair is rough, brittle to the touch, and prone to split ends. Sound like your hair?
We don’t know about you, but we're just not willing to give up our fabulous hair styles. So what’s a girl to do? Here are some tips:
1) Turn down the heat. We know it's addictive, but try to apply less and less heat each week. Take small steps towards healthier tresses. If you use the flat iron twice a week, reduce it to once a week until you've found ways to eliminate it completely between salon visits. Try wrapping your hair at night and wearing a silk scarf. And don't forget to use a heat protectant like the Creme of Nature with Argan Oil Strength & Shine Leave-In before applying hot irons or using blow dryers.
Chemical treatments have the same effect as heat because both break and bend the bonds of your tresses. Only get your retouches when you absolutely must. Some relaxed ladies "stretch" between treatments, which give their hair a break from the strain of chemicals. The combination of heat and chemicals can be damaging as well. So if you're relaxed, you may look into more wet sets and wraps to achieve your sleek dos.
2) Limit the friction. It's a myth that if you wear your hair natural, there is less to do. In fact, you may manipulate your hair more throughout the week than your relaxed sisters. With all the twisting and knotting and detangling and tugging, you can injure your hair with daily grooming. Try to adopt a hairstyling routine that allows you to twist and tug less. Commit to detangling once a week at the most with a wide tooth comb and plenty of conditioner in your hair. Many natural sisters love our Creme of Nature with Lemongrass and Rosemary Leave-In conditioner for daily use. It's also a great product for detangling. But if you haven't tried our Creme of Nature with Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment after cleansing, you should. It smells divine, and it will allow you to detangle wet hair and give your hair less of a beating. You'll also see that your hair sheds less during this process. If you rock your natural curls, the truth is that you should use your fingers to style your hair and not combs and brushes that tug and snag. Save those for the detangling (wide-tooth comb) and for that special-occasion blow out (brush).
All of the products I’ve mentioned are reasonably priced, include certified organic ingredients by the FDA, and can be found at a local retailer near you. Let me hear from you after you’ve tried them; We’d love to read your comments.
