On February 21, 2011, we asked you for some of your burning hair questions that you'd like for Dr. Fran to answer. As a preview to tomorrow night's chat, we'd like to answer a few of those questions for you as a sneak peek into what kinds of answers the Creme of Nature Dermatologist will provide.
Thanks, ladies. First, let's take on dry scalp since a few of you have those questions. First know that dandruff and dry scalp are not synonymous. In fact, one is more prevalent than the other. Can you guess which? Well, it's not dandruff. That is a common misconception. In fact, many people mistake product build up for either dandruff or dry scalp. Dry scalp is the most common condition. It's important to have your condition correctly identified before you invest in a treatment, whether over the counter or from a professional.
So how can you tell the difference? Dandruff almost always has a color to it--typically a yellow, orange because it is a mixture of skin, sebum (oils from the scalp), sweat and bacteria. Dry scalp is almost always white in color, and it is a result of itchy, scalp that is dehydrated. In other word, there is a lack of sebum coming from the glands in your scalp. In fact, the two are nearly opposites from that perspective, but there are some treatments that can take care of both. However, sometimes dry scalp can be taken care of simply by switching your hair care products a bit. This simple preventative measure can make a world of difference to your scalp.
Is your product leaving buildup? This is another culprit of dry scalp that can leave dry, flaky white matter in the hair. Sometimes heavy shampoos and conditioners, hair sprays, gels and other products can be the source of these problems.
Do you have overactive sebaceous glands? Product build up can really compound the situation. Avoid anything that leaves a waxy buildup on your hair, hair grease, hair balms, butters or pomades. Whatever you do, do not use dandruff shampoos on a dry scalp! It will only dry your hair and scalp more and increase your issue. For those of you with coarse hair, despite what our grandmothers may have told us, oiling our scalps or using hair grease will only exacerbate the issue.
So the answers to most dry scalp issues are
1) Switch up your products, they may be drying your hair and scalp.
2) Try adding moisturizing shampoos and conditioners and styling products that hydrate, like Creme of Nature's Red Clover and Aloe Soothing Shampoo or from the Argan Oil line, the Creme of Nature with Argan Oil Conditioning Treatment. The Certified Organic ingredients can help you on your way back to healthy hair and scalp.
But remember, less is more! Your hair and scalp will love you for it.
By the way, Jenny and Dell, if you suspect that you may have a more serious problem than dandruff or dry scalp, go see your dermatologist for any number of medical treatments that may be able to help. For conditions like psoriasis, also see the dermatologist.
And Groves, you know the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"? The same applies to split ends. If your ends aren't splitting, you can forgo a trim. Using a heat protectant for heat styling (The award-winning Creme of Nature with Argan Oil Gloss & Polisher is a great sealant and protectant when heat styling), protecting your hair in the winter time by using a satin pillow case and lining your wool hats with satin or silk.
